Stick of Butter

 She came out of the corner grocery carrying a small rectangular package in her hand. The expression on her face would have told a stranger passing by that something was terribly wrong. “I almost didn’t buy this”, she said. “The price has gone up 15 centavos in two days. “How can I afford things if they go up all the time?” Somebody touched her arms. “You will be able to afford it. You have 2 pensions now.” She looked at the woman and then turned her eyes towards the doors of the church across the street. “No, she answered shaking her head.” He’s dead and everything is different.” “This, she said, holding up the hard yellow stick.” He used to bring 3 or 4 of these a week. Today I was afraid to buy just one.”
