One of Us

The woman, all dressed in black, was carrying an airline type cart. She stopped where we all stood in line at the soup kitchen. Excuse me, she asked. Is this the Coalition for the Homeless? Yes, someone answered. The Ladies First line is right there, where those women are. No, I don’t want to stand in line, she said smiling at the man. I want to make a donation. Excuse me, the man told her, pointing at both lines. I thought you were one of us. He led her up to her the soup kitchen door is and stood by her after he rang the bell. She’s wearing a Prada bag and I thought she was one of us, guys! The man said, after she had gone inside. Some of us smiled, others ignored him.
